‘Go Folkestone’ Leaders Join Channel Rotary to Explore Exciting New Collaboration
Channel Rotary was delighted to welcome two leading members of ‘Go Folkestone’, a local volunteer-led action group.
Chair, Tony Quarrington and Vice Chair Marie‑Hélène Hunter joined the club as guests, opening a lively discussion on shared goals and future collaboration with the Club.
He highlighted the strong alignment between the two organisations – Channel Rotary like ‘Go Folkestone’ is a volunteer‑led, albeit with 300 members, non‑political action group dedicated to making Folkestone an even better place to live, work, and visit.
He spoke of ‘Go Folkestone’s’ mission to bring people together to protect local heritage, enhance the environment, and champion community‑driven projects that make everyday life richer, greener, and more rewarding.
These aims sit naturally alongside Channel Rotary’s long‑standing commitment to supporting local charities and those suffering hardship in the community.
Following the meeting, both Tony and Marie‑Hélène joined Channel as ‘Friends of Channel Rotary’, a rapidly expanding part of Channel Rotary where members volunteer to contribute in fundraising and service activities, whilst participating in the Club’s social activities.
This new relationship signals a bright future of joint initiatives and community‑focused action for Folkestone.
CHANNEL ROTARY HELPS FOODBANK COLLECTION

Channel Rotary have supported the Shepway Foodbank run by the Rainbow centre for many years. This Christmas Channel Members and their partners were at Tesco Cheriton to encourage customers to give to the Foodbank. Each year the amount given is a wonderful sign of people’s generosity, it never fails to amaze everyone taking part how generous people can be. Some just dropped off a couple of items, others gave a whole bag full and in one or two cases even a trolley load. Mum Katie with her children Evie and Mia was just one of those donating a trolley load (see photo).
When asked why she was giving so much “I have been in this situation myself and are just very grateful that thanks to the Food bank in the past I can now give back”
Channel Rotary and the Food bank are really grateful for the publics’ magnificent support.
The aim of the Trussel Trust Shepway operation is to make sure that no one in the local community has to go hungry, and it’s the help from people like Channel Rotary that makes this happen.

David Wilkie of Channel Rotary presented a cheque for £500 to Peter Talbot, headmaster of Castle Hill Community Primary School in Folkestone to help fund Christmas hampers for children and families struggling financially.
CHANNEL ROTARY £7000 SUPPORT FOR PILGRIMS HOSPICE
This year Channel Rotary Folkestone have chosen Pilgrims Hospice as their main charity and as such they will benefit by 50% of all the proceeds from events being run this year by the club.
This has included a very successful Wine & Wisdom quiz evening when over an hundred contestants took part. This was followed by a wine tasting evening, where you had to guess the wines against the experts answer.
The biggest event has been the golf day which generated over £4000 for the Hospice. In addition more funds were raised at the Annual Cycle Ride on Romney Marsh and at a new event for this year – Adventure Golf at Folkestone Harbour
So far they have benefited by over £7000
The Pilgrims hospice is east Kent’s largest hospice charity and helps people facing incurable illness to live well in every moment. Their aim is to provide quality care and support that’s tailored to the individual and their family. Today they have over 200 Pilgrims nurses and therapists. Together they support thousands of people in east Kent each year. ROTARY YOUNG ARTIST WINNERS

Every year Great Britain & Ireland National Rotary runs a number of competitions for Young People. The Young Artist competition is run locally by Folkestone Channel Rotary with winners going forward to the district and then onto the national final.
The theme this year was “Wonderful Water” and many excellent entries were received. There were three successful winners from the Folkestone area.
Eli Oestmann from Sandgate Primary who won the Junior Section (7-10 yrs),
Varsha Rao from Folkestone School for Girls who won the Intermediate (11- 13yrs)
Emma Hansen, also from Folkestone School won the Senior section (14-17yrs). Emma also went on to win the district final which gained her entry to the National final where her picture was highly commended.
David Jarvis Past President of Channel Rotary “ As always the standard of entries was very high as can be seen from the pictures. This is a great competition for young people to enter a professionally run competition which comes with a chance of competing at the National level.”
Each of the local Rotary clubs takes the responsibility for organising one of the Youth Challenges. In addition to Folkestone Channel Club running the Young Artist; Folkestone Rotary – Young Chef, Hythe Rotary – Youth Speaks and Romney Marsh – Young Writer.
There will be the opportunity for all local schools to enter again in the coming school year.

CHANNEL CHARITY CYCLE CHALLENGE
It was a warm but cloudy July day for the 15th edition of the Channel Cycle Challenge. The day started early with the first cyclists leaving at 7am. The distances of 80, 50 and 30 miles were enthusiastically tackled with tired but happy participants at the end of the day. The route, signage and marshalling were particularly praised.
The ride started at Haugeland’s Farm near Dymchurch. Great support was given by the Marsh Maze and Funyard.
A Paramedic was on hand for any incidents – fortunately he was not needed. Mechanical support was provided by ACTIV cycles – they were a little busier, very many thanks to them for their attendance and help.
This year a Family Treasure Hunt Ride was held with Pirate themed literature supplied by Paul James. The highlight of the ride was the Newchurch Air Force memorial – as families arrived they were treated to an impromptu Spitfire flypast.
It was a very successful day with many positive comments “ the signage was brilliant didn’t need my GPS”, “Great event today. Thank you to all involved. Fantastic food stop as always. Thank you all so much”. Barry Hill Sunday Bike Club
An excellent day all round with nearly Five Thousand Pounds raised for Pilgrims Hospice and local charities. Global Sight Solutions
“After a recent donation from Channel Rotary John and Fiona Miles (Guildford RC), Martin Wyatt (Ashford RC) came to visit Channel Rotary recently to talk about their Charity Global Sight Solutions.
Set up in 1990 by the Guildford Rotary club to help people with sight problems in third world countries. The aim being to provide physical hospitals local to the need. This became a real example of the way the Rotary Global grant scheme can work.
Each project required a local Rotary in the area to be its sponsor and once funds were raised these were significantly increased by grants from RIBI. There are now 70 hospitals mainly in India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Uganda, Lebanon, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and The Philippines They treat all kinds of eye care
from spectacles to cataracts. For example, they have already carried 200,000 cataract operations.
The talk by John Miles helped to explain how the company was formed and is working now.”

DRAMATIC FINISH TO CHANNEL ROTARY ADVENTURE GOLF FINALS (Press Release)
On a lovely summer evening at Folkestone Beachside the inaugural Folkestone adventure golf championship week, to coincide with Open Golf, ended with two of the finalists shooting an excellent score of 26 for 12 holes so they could only be separated by Count back
Rossi, a regular visitor to Folkestone, and a serial winner on the adventure golf circuit won because of a hole in one on the last and is pictured holding the claret jug alongside Leo the under 16 winner.
Local man Dan finished in an honourable second and will be a strong contender for next year‘s championship
Channel Rotary organiser Colin Tomson thanked all the entrants for contributing much needed funds for local charities, and praised Folkestone Harbour company and Hulas beach shack for generously providing the excellent facilities during a busy period
CHANNEL ROTARY CELEBRATES NEW MEMBERS

A recent meeting at the Clifton Hotel Folkestone saw a celebration of new members and a new president installed at Channel Rotary.
Malcolm Stewart handed over the reins to Howard Cocker. Howard promised the club another year of fun and fellowship with a strong emphasis on helping the local community as the club has done for the last 45 years. Channel’s successful fundraising events had raised hundreds of thousands of pounds over those years and he was sure that that would continue. In 2025 there have already been a very successful Wine & Wisdom quiz, a Wine Tasting and a sell out Golf Day.. Two more are imminent the annual Cycle Ride on the Marsh and a new Adventure Golf Challenge down at the Harbour Arm.

In addition to full membership of the club Channel Rotary have introduced a Friends category for those who would like to help with the aims of the club but only have limited time. Channel Rotary Awarded a Shelterbox Bronze Partner Certificate
Channel Rotary is proud to have been awarded a Bronze Partner Certificate in recognition of the support they have given to ShelterBox during the year 2024/25.
Channel Rotary raises funds in support of ShelterBox who exist to ensure no one is without shelter after disaster by providing emergency shelter and tools for families robbed of their homes by disaster. ShelterBox has provided shelter to over three million people so far.
THE BATTLE FOR THE ADVENTURE GOLF CLARET JUG

The excitement is mounting as the date for Channel Rotary’s Adventure Golf Championship at The Harbour Arm Folkestone is getting near. There will be a coveted Claret Jug to win just like the one being fought for at the Open Golf Championships the same week.
Mike Simmonds Channels top golfer is keen to get his hands on the trophy but Colin Tomson, who is organising the inaugural championship event is convinced that somebody will come along and score better on the finals day Saturday, the 19th of July
The Hulas Beach Shack will be hosting this unique event taking place at the brilliantly designed 12 hole course on Beachside (behind The Folkestone Harbour arm) this is a genuine test for all standards to find the best putter in town!
You can qualify for the finals by beating the target score of 26. Just turn up at the Golf centre on the beach by the Harbour Arm and enter one of the heats each evening from 14th to the 18th July 6.00 to 9.00 pm. Entry fee is just £10 [£6 for under 16] and all proceeds go to Channel Rotary local charities.
On finals day there is a claret jug to win for both adults and under 16s so its all to play for!
There is no need to pre-book, just check in at Hulas Beach shack where there is a wide range of food and drink available and clubs and balls are provided

This year’s Channel Rotary annual golf day was a great success with over 40 teams entered playing for individual and team prizes including nearest the pins and beat the pro which proved very popular.
It was a sunny but windy day at the very well-presented course at Sene Valley Golf Club and was a closely fought with both team and men’s individual winners being decided on count back
The Mens Team Winners – Dan Hulme, Jon Hulme, Josh de Haan and Chris Kent. Ladies Team – Linda Dicks, Tina Oughton, Sue Price and Sarah Lloyd. Mixed Team- Mike and Lisa Simmonds, Geoff Milsted and Paul Simmonds.
Individua winners were Men – Dan Hulme, Women – Sue Price
The day raised over £8K for the Pilgrims Hospice and other local charities through entry fees and the generosity of players buying raffle tickets and paying to try and beat the pro on the par 3 11th hole. Many teams also made an additional donation with their entry fee.

IT’S ALL A LOAD OF BOULES
Members of Channel had an excellent social night out at The Farriers Arms, in Mersham, where 20 of its members had an enjoyable competitive evening of petanque. For most of the members it was a new adventure which they took to it in style and after a hard fought series of matches all returned to the bar for a celebratory drink and an excellent meal in the restaurant.

Would you believe it, there is a World Championship for adventure golf. And in Folkestone, Channel Rotary are starting their own competition to coincide with the Open Championship week.
Who is the best putter in your family, or in your Golf Club?
You can find the answer at the Channel Rotary adventure golf championship.
Taking place in July this year the Hulas Beach Shack will be hosting this unique event taking place at the brilliantly designed 12 hole course on Beachside (behind The Folkestone Harbour arm) this is a genuine test for all standards to find the best putter in town! Heats will take place during the week beginning 14th July.
Just turn up at the Golf centre on the beach by the Harbour Arm and enter one of the heats each evening from 6.00 to 8.00 pm. Entry fee is just £10 [£6 for under 15] and all proceeds go to Channel Rotary local charities.
Those with a score 26 or less will then take part in the grand final on Saturday evening between 5.00 and 8.00pm
This is a really unique event taking place at an adventure golf course that is one of the best in the country and is a real challenge for all golfers and non golfers alike.
You can book in and get all your equipment at the Hulas beach shack where there’s a range of food and drink to enjoy before or after your round
It is going to be a fun week, so come and enjoy it. Just like in the Open championship the winner will receive a claret jug and be the inaugural Champion!

CHANNEL CHARITY CYCLE CHALLENGE – PILGRIMS HOSPICE

A date for your diary – Sunday 13th of July. Channel Rotary’s cycle ride on Romney Marsh has been going for over ten years and this year will be starting and finishing at Haguelands Farm, Burmarsh. The main charity to benefit this year will be the Pilgrims Hospice.
The Channel Challenge is riding circular flat routes of either 30, 50 or 80 miles around the picturesque Romney Marsh, either as an individual, team or family. Entrants can time themselves for the ride or take as leisurely pace as they wish- riding solo or as a Family, Club or Work Group
New this year is the 13 mile family Treasure Hunt cracking tricky clues and learning more about smugglers, wildlife, and the fascinating history of Romney Marsh. Starting and finishing at Haguelands farm gives you the added possibility of visiting the Marsh Maze and the Fun Yard with its summer playground, castles and games

The idea is to simply enjoy the ride and have fun raising money for charity.

Presentation To Pilgrims Hospices
Recently Guy Valentine-Neal was able to present a cheque for £450 to Pilgrims Hospice as part of the proceeds from the Wine Tasting evening.
It was a great social evening of education and entertaining participants about a variety of different wines as well as supporting our local hospice.

A request was made to Rotary to help 5 families in hardship and to help to pay for school uniforms .
Kent Coast Volunteering
On May 14th Michaela Luckett from Kent Coast Volunteering gave a talk to the Club. She gave an overview of the service to local charities and the community which KCV provides, and gave a more detailed description of the Good Neighbour Service and their Driver Scheme.
The Good Neighbour Service matches volunteers with local people, often people with mobility issues, who need a little company for a short period on a weekly or other basis. The Driver Scheme does something similar in matching volunteer drivers with clients needing a lift, e.g. to hospital or doctor’s appointments etc.

CHANNEL ROTARY SUPPORTS HIKENT & BABY BASICS

A lot of fund raising organisations donate to the big national charities, but at Channel Rotary they try to make sure that some of the less well known local charities get some help too. Recently they were able to give donations to two such organisations.
HI Kent is a charity that supports deaf people and those with hearing loss. Its aim is to allow them to live as normal a life as possible. This is achieved by providing hearing aid clinics to support the maintenance of NHS hearing aids, running courses on British Sign Language and lip reading, plus helping those suffering from tinnitus.
Jon Lambert from HiKent came to a recent meeting of Folkestone Channel Rotary to receive a donation of £1000.
The second charity that has benefitted is Baby Basics. Baby Basics Folkestone provide essential baby items and equipment to struggling families.. To ensure that the families of Kent have somewhere safe and warm for baby to sleep, hygiene to keep clean and prams to be able to go out safely. This incudes clothes , nappies and other essentials that are needed for the first few months of life. Also baby equipment including cots so that babies have a safe place to sleep

ROTARIANS RAISE £52000 DONATION TO FUND
NEW RAPID RESPONSE VEHICLE – (Press Release)
Channel Rotary Folkestone were delighted to be part of the big fund raising effort to help the Air Ambulance purchase a new Rapid Response Vehicle. It is now one of a fleet of four specially equipped RRVs used to respond to incidents across Kent, Surrey, and Sussex when the helicopters are unable to take to the air. These vehicles carry the same equipment and drugs as the helicopters but are not used to transport patients to hospital. That is done by helicopter or land ambulance.
Air Ambulance Community Fundraising Manager, Nick Turrell, said: “It was fantastic to be able to purchase the vehicle that Rotarians across the region have funded and which now plays a key role in making sure that we can deliver our lifesaving service 24/7. As an independent charity, we are here for millions of people across Kent, Surrey, and Sussex and respond to an average of nine emergency calls for help each day. But it’s only thanks to our supporters that we can continue to reach people when they need us most, so we are so grateful for this incredible donation.”

CHANNEL ROTARY SUPPORTS HOMESTART – (Press Release)
Sam O’Connor of Homestart came to Channel recently to acknowledge the contribution that they had received from Channel Rotary.
She was able to explain that Homestart Shepway is a local community network of trained volunteers and expert support. They help families with young children with practical and confidential support, with specialised one-to-one support tailored to each individual family’s needs, They also help female victims with a child under 8, who have been affected by domestic abuse, either current or historic. Home-Start is there for families when they need it the most, because childhood can’t wait.

CHANNEL ROTARY RUNS KENTS BIGGEST QUIZ (Press Release)
Over 120 contestants came to the William Harvey Grammar School in Folkestone to raise money for Channel Rotary’s local charities. Channel Rotary has been running this Wine & Wisdom evening for over 30 years.
The teams had to tackle a whole range of questions from science to sport whilst enjoying a ploughman’s and good wine.
The competition for the quiz was keen but eventually the team from Folkestone Rotary just got into the lead, making it two wins in succession The winning team were Rob & Alison Cowell, Terry Cooke-Davis and Tom McNiece.
Nearly £2000 was raised to support local charities and it was so successful that as people were leaving they were asking – when are you going to do the next one – next year for sure.

A key moment of the evening was the launch of two new membership categories: ‘Corporate Membership’ and ‘Friends’ of Channel Rotary, introduced alongside the traditional ‘Full Membership’. Friendship and Celebration at Channel Rotary’s Handover
The Black Horse in Monks Horton came alive with joyous laughter, music, and celebration during the Channel Rotary Club’s regular handover dinner. This special event marked the ceremonial transfer of leadership, with outgoing President Peter Godden passing the presidential Jewel to the incoming Dr. Malcolm Stewart.
The night was enriched with an international spirit, as seven members and their partners from the Rotary Club of Mechelen, Belgium, joined the festivities as part of a planned “raid.” Led by President Hugo Hondequin,.
A highlight of the evening was the surprise 90th birthday celebration of Brian Barnes, a founding member of Channel Rotary. Heartfelt tributes honoured his remarkable contributions and enduring legacy, making the occasion all the more memorable.
The entertainment was masterfully provided by singer Jason Allen, whose captivating performance set the perfect tone for the event.
Filled with camaraderie, joy, and shared purpose, the evening embodied the strong bond between the Channel and Mechelen Rotary Clubs—a partnership of 25 years which is sure to continue creating cherished memories and meaningful collaborations for years to come.
Youth Speaks Competition (Press Release)
This year’s Youth Speaks competition was held at Brockhill Park Performing Arts College last Wednesday, with eight teams competing in the Intermediate (five teams) and Senior (three teams) competitions.
Six club members joined representatives of the other three clubs and others for the occasion, which proved to be another success and a tribute to the commendable organising capability of Hythe club.
It was gratifying to see and hear talented youngsters demonstrate their communication skills.
Brockhill won the Intermediate competition with the topic “Arts for All” and the Senior competition was won by the Folkestone Girls school team, whose coverage of the topic “Should We Read Fairy Tales to Children” impressed everyone present.
The winning teams each received a silver cup, together with a £100 cheque for their school.
Visit to the Creative Quarter
At Channel Rotary we like to find interesting outings so we can learn what is happening in our area. Recently we visited the Creative Quarter in Folkestone and met Nick Easthope of East Hope Stained Class.
Nick gave us a fascinating tour of his studios and explained in some detail the work of his company. We learnt how a new window is constructed with coloured glass and lead from a unique design.
The majority of their work is for Churches and similar buildings where the stained glass windows needs restoring. As an example they have just done the complete restoration of the windows in the Maison Dieu in Dover.
This is a fascinating process needing a very high degree of skill and
artistry, particularly where the figures and symbols need to be reproduced exactly as the damaged window. It made a really interesting evening and especially as most of us didn’t realise that we had such a unique business
in the town.
Just one of those local activities that Channel Rotary likes to engage in when we are not fundraising or helping the local community.
OLGA AND MYKOLA STEBLKANKO
Three years on since the start of the full scale war in Ukraine, prominent Ukraine Rotarians, Olga and Mykola Stebljanko, based in Odesa, describe what life is like in their country and the positive impact that Rotary support is having on peoples’ lives.
Mykola explains how during those first months the Rotary clubs received clear and coordinated instructions on how to act under conditions of uncertainty and danger, enabling Rotarians to organise and focus on service.
“Local communities, government institutions, and the public sector have come to see Rotary as a reliable partner in addressing the aftermath of the humanitarian crisis.”
“Despite the dangers and the immense challenges of living in Ukraine, local Rotarians tirelessly continue serving their communities, supported by the greater Rotary family from all corners of the world.”

CHANNEL ROTARY GIVES £20,000 OF SUPPORT IN 2024 – Press release
Over the last year Channel Rotary have raised over £20,000 for all kinds of charitable causes the majority of which has found its way to a wide variety of local Charities and Christmas is no exception.
Every year Folkestone Channel Rotary does as much as it can to support local organisations at Christmas time. This year the young, elderly and under privileged have benefited from their activities.
In the run up to Christmas they donated 48 Hampers to the Age UK Christmas Appeal to help those older people in our area with a parcel of food to help them over the festive season.
Channel were delighted to support the Folkestone & Hythe District Council Wish Upon A Star initiative with £1000 of food vouchers, so that a loving gift could be received by vulnerable children and young people in the district at Christmas
Cllr Mike Blakemore, Cabinet Member for Community and Collaboration, said: “Wish Upon A Star demonstrates one of the most important aspects of the season – it’s about giving joy to those who need it most. The generosity of our staff and community partners is no surprise to me. It’s heartwarming to see everyone come together to do something that will mean so much for our district’s children and young people come Christmas Day.”
The four Rotary clubs in the district – Folkestone, Folkestone Channel, Hythe And Romney Marsh have given much needed financial support to the Beacon special needs School over the last year and were delighted to provide help with the Beacon School Christmas fair, and Channel even provided the Father Christmas.
Finally Channel Rotary were able to arrange for the local Saltwood Handbell Ringers to bring some festive cheer by visiting three nursing homes and perform for the residents. The group’s performances were much appreciated by all, and the fun of singing along.
Channel Rotary are looking forward to giving as much help as they can in 2025 and have two fundraising events already planned. A fun Wine Tasting evening at Chichester Hall Sandgate on the 12th February and Kent’s Biggest quiz night at the Harvey School on 12th March – Wine & Wisdom at its finest. CHANNEL ROTARY SLEEPOUT FOR THE HOMELESS – Press Release
The local community quietly gathered on Friday evening to think about social need in our district, to talk about solutions and to raise funds. A group of 18 people including some from Rotary and some students from Earlscliffe College Interact club gathered in the Three Hills to sleep outside as a gesture of understanding for the plight of the homeless of our local area and to raise funds which would be shared between the Rainbow Centre and Channel Rotary’s Charitable fund.
Amongst those to sleep outside were the Mayor Abena Akuffo- Kelly, Vice-Chair of the District Council, Tim Prater; Rotary District Governor Brian Dunne, and President of Channel Rotary Peter Godden and Jaden the President of the Interact Club.
The earlier part of the evening was hosted upstairs in the Three Hills where Shane Record created a painting which was broadcast online while he worked, for live auction with all funds donated.
While Shane worked, the audience heard short talks:
• From the Rainbow Centre by Catriona Hunter, on success stories of last year’s Winter Shelter and the hopes for a permanent shelter to help to rebuild lives.
• The Town Mayor on solutions and collaborations in the district addressing need and deprivation.
• The Vice-chair of the District Council on addressing the housing need and the problems of homelessness.
• Channel’s President spoke about other ways by which Rotary helps in the community especially disadvantaged young people.
Before going to sleep outside the participants were treated to hot soup and bread provided by students of South Kent College.
Large cardboard boxes were provided for those sleeping to use to try to create some comfort as they set up camp outside the new Padlestar courts in the Three Hills grounds. Three Hills provided hot drinks during the night and breakfast rolls were served at 6am.
About £7,500 has been raised so far which will be put to immediate use in helping during the winter.
Special thanks were given to Three Hills for the use of their meeting room and park and thanks South Kent College students for the soup and rolls; perfect nourishment for a rather cool evening.

ROTARY £2500 DONATION TO BEACON SCHOOL- Press Release

The Folkestone and District Youth Group, comprising the Rotary Clubs of Romney Marsh, Hythe, Folkestone and Folkestone Channel have made a further donation to support the Beacon School.
These local Rotary Clubs have been supporting the school for some time and were please to give another £2500 in order that they can make improvements to their outside café, provide a picket fenced to enclose the vegetable and flower planters already provided by Rotary. Also it is hope to be able to reorganise the Library facilities at the school.
The Beacon School which recently achieved an outstanding Ofsted inspection remains very committed and enthusiastic about providing new opportunities for some 400 special needs pupils and the development of outside community involvement.
The following extract from an Ofsted report sums up the achievements at The Beacon:-
“The environment is stimulating. Staff provide a wide range of practical activities to encourage children to learn and develop well.
Effective provision ensures that children make good or outstanding progress from their starting points, particularly in their personal, social and emotional development, physical development and in their communication and language skills”
The Rotary Clubs in Folkestone and District are delighted to have provided funds to help with many of the practical activities.

CHANNEL ROTARY SUPPORT THE DISADVANTAGED

Folkestone Channel Rotary has been helping the disadvantaged locally for a number of years by giving out supermarket vouchers.
Mike Simmonds Channel Rotary President was able to give another tranche of £1000 worth of vouchers to Michelle Ede the Housing Advice and Prevention Officer for Folkestone & Hythe Council, who explained-
“The vouchers are going to be given to households who have fled domestic abuse and gone into temporary accommodation or for those who have been in temporary accommodation and do not have any items and are moving into social housing or private rented properties.
We have met many families who have fled domestic abuse with very little if anything and the money could go to buying clothes and toys. With families moving into a property, they do not always have the money to purchase items as simple as a kettle or a toaster. The vouchers will help them start to get items to make the property a home, where there is no funding already available.
Each household will be assessed on an individual basis with the approval by our team leader.
This generous gift of vouchers will help many families who have gone through difficult times.”
During this year Channel Rotary have been able to give over £4000 worth of supermarket vouchers to a variety of organisations, from young carers to homeless families. They are able to do that by their numerous fundraising events from Cycle Rides to Wine & Wisdom. Folkestone Channel Rotary have been twinned with the Rotary club of Mechelen in Belgium for over 20 years. A group of 23 members and partners visited the Belgium club for a weekend of celebrations to mark the Mechelen club’s 90 years.
Once across the Chanel the festivities started with Mechelen Rotarians inviting small groups into their homes for an evening meal. The hospitality was amazing and it really helped to cement what were already great friendships.
The next day there was a guided visit to Brussels where Channel, accompanied by several Mechelen Rotarians, were able to see all the sights and find out about the history and importance of the city, but still leave plenty of time for shopping and personal sightseeing.
The 90th celebration gala dinner and dance held at Salon van Dijk was the highlight of the visit where representatives of all Mechelen’s twin clubs from Germany, the Netherlands and England were able to give their best wishes to President Hugo Hondiquin and all their members on this historic milestone.
During the evening Courtney Collins, who for many years has been Channel’s key contact with the Mechelen club, was presented with a Paul Harris fellowship by President Hugo Hondiquin. This is an international Rotary honour for service to Rotary and only given for special reasons.
The final morning was a walk around Mechelen which culminated in being in the town square when King Philippe came to visit on his bicycle! Every year the King does a walk/cycle about in Mechelen. It was amazing to see him and his daughter just wandering around shaking hands. When asked where is your wife he said “she is just in that shop over their trying on some clothes.”
What a fantastic weekend of celebration and friendship between two international clubs. Channel Rotary look forward to welcoming their Mechelen friends to Folkestone next year.

President Mike Simmonds was delighted to present a cheque for £2000 to the Chief Executive of South Kent Mind, Sheridan Hammond.
The money was raised through the successful and well-loved Folkestone Channel Cycle Challenge held in July. The funds will enable SK Mind to continue their essential work.
The Cycle Challenge has been held annually for the last 15 years and has raised over £100,000 in that time for local charities.
Sheridan thanked Mike and the members of Channel Rotary : “ We are incredibly grateful to the Channel Rotary Club (@channelrotary) for their generous donation of £2000 raised through their Charity Cycle Challenge in Romney Marsh on Sunday 7 July 2024!
With this donation we can continue our hard work to support those facing mental health challenges in our community.”
CHANNEL ROTARY GIVES HEADWAY KENT £4000 – Press Release
Following a very successful golf day Folkestone Channel Rotary were pleased to present Hayley Cook, Head of Operations at Headway with a cheque for £4100. The golf day has been run by Channel Rotary for some 30 years and this year was one of the most successful.

Headway supports survivors and their families by offering a safe community to relearn life skills post the injury. This is done using community hubs, one to one and online. They take referrals from both the East Kent Hospital Trust and Social Care. This summer they launched an additional service of a “living with brain injury workshop” aimed at new sufferers.

ROTARY ALPACA TREAT FOR YOUNG CARERS – Press Release
A group of Young Carers were treated to a day out by the four local Rotary clubs (Folkestone, Channel, Hythe and Romney Marsh). Together with Tina Culver, Local Young Carer Coordinator, Assistant Molly Woolf and Rotarians from all four clubs they visited Hagueland, Burmarsh, for a splendid Meet and Greet the Alpacas experience followed by lunch.
The Young Carers had great fun hand-feeding both adult and baby Alpacas. There was also an opportunity for them to take photographs of their thrilling experience, excitement clearly showing on their delighted faces.
After lunch they spent another two hours enjoying the pleasures and thrills of the Marsh Maze and Fun-yard, where they excitedly participated in the various activities clearly designed to keep youngsters delightedly excited and happy.
Tina, a member of Imago, the organization engaged by KCC to provide support for children and young people in Folkestone and Hythe District who have special responsibility for family members, thanked Rotary for arranging the outing. She was thrilled at the very positive feedback from the Young Carers, summed up by a couple of them in their comments “This is the best day of my Summer holidays”.
This followed a recent donation by Channel Rotary of £50 Supermarket vouchers presented by Mike Simmonds, club president, to Tina Culver to distribute to those young carer families most in need. Tina, a member of Imago, the organisation engaged by KCC to provide support for local children and young people who have special responsibility for family members. She was most appreciative of the club’s donation and personally distributed the vouchers to very grateful families as can be seen from the comments.

ROTARY YOUNG ARTIST NATIONAL WINNER – Press Release
Every year Great Britain & Ireland National Rotary runs a number of competitions for Young People. The Young Artist competition is run locally by Folkestone Channel Rotary with winners going forward to the district and then onto a national final.
We are pleased to announce that Eleanor Prineas from Folkestone School for Girls has just won the National Prize in the senior age category. Ellie had to beat over a thousand entries and was presented with her trophy and winning vouchers by Mike Simmonds President of Channel Rotary.
Ellie was accompanied by her parents Karen and Mark to an enjoyable meal with Channel Rotarians
Ellie commented on her painting “’This piece is an acrylic painting of my youngest sister. I chose to paint her playing alone with Jenga and Dominoes, games from our childhood that require rebuilding after completion. As the youngest sibling, my little sister is playing alone with these toys- and therefore forced to rebuild the blocks by herself.
The harsh lighting and dramatic shadows amplify the tension and frustration that she feels as she is the lonely youngest child, whilst also demonstrating the guilt I feel as the eldest for making her rebuild alone.”

Folkestone school for girls did really well in the competition with several other pupils getting highly commended for the local heats. Annabel, Ellie’s sister, also won the local intermediate age category.

CHANNEL ROTARY MARSH CYCLE CHALLENGE BEATS THE WEATHER – Press Release
Channel Rotary has been running a cycle challenge from the Star inn at St Mary in the Marsh for ten years and this year the elements contrived to make it difficult. With high winds and intermittent heavy showers the riders had plenty to contend with.
Undaunted the first riders were away at 7.00am to tackle a choice of three routes – 30, 50 or 80 miles. A fully signposted route with marshals to ensure everything went smoothly.
There were lots of great stories from the cyclists. Two riders were trying out their new hips for the first time Julia Waffon, who rode last year was attempting it a few months after her operation. Clive Allon was even more adventurous his operation had only been six weeks before, not sure what his doctor would have said!
A few teams stood out – the One for the Road Cycling club led by Barry Hoegood who had finished his stint as a DJ at The Inn on the Lake Gravesend only a few hours earlier and still managed to cycle 80 miles. There were several family teams braving the weather as well. It was great to see brand new Channel Rotary Member Gwen Finch and her family. Dalice’s family from Kingsnorth had five riders including Charlotte aged 10. They were off on the 50 mile route – it seemed that most of the adults had electric bikes but Charlotte did not!
All this effort was to raise money for South Kent Mind the local mental health charity offering support to anyone who may be struggling with their mental health and wellbeing from Sandwich through to Dungeness.
Sally Fraser from Mind, who also helped marshal on the day, “We offer a range of activities such as art, music, mindfulness, cooking and walking to name a few, these take place in our centre in Folkestone and also in spaces in Deal and Dover. These activities give our service users the space to be heard and supported enabling them to build confidence and resilience as well as learning new skills and getting creative. It also crucially helps them form social connections in their local community.
As well as these activities, we also run money guidance sessions, dealing with both the practical and emotional issues that come with financial stress. We also offer low cost counselling.
We were really pleased to be selected as the lead charity for this Channel Rotary event and also enjoyed taking part”

Channel Rotary Handover
Channel Rotary handover saw Mike Simmonds take over from Geoff Milsted ” as President “at the new Brasserie MS on 26th June. The club were treated to a lovely gourmet meal which gave an excellent start to the Rotary New Year.
Mike a planning consultant has been a Rotarian for many years transferring from Folkestone some ten years ago and is looking forward to leading the club for the next four months after which he will be followed by his co presidents -Peter Godden & then Malcolm Stewart.

Channel Rotary Helps Foodbank Collection
Channel Rotary have supported the Shepway Foodbank run by the Rainbow centre for many years. This month they have been helping at ASDA in Folkestone encouraging customers to buy some extra items and donate them to the foodbank. It’s always a pleasure to talk to customers and to find out just how generous people can be from just one individual item to whole basket loads.
Th result of this was over a ton of grocery items donated to help keep the Foodbank stay in stock
The aim of the Trussel Trust Shepway operation is to make sure that no one in the local community has to go hungry, and it’s the help from people like Channel Rotary that makes this happen.
Wendy Lehnert from the Rainbow Centre was delighted with the result.
“Not only did we collect lots of groceries but heightened the publicity of the Rainbow Centre, foodbank and Pantry.
And if that wasn’t enough, we also helped people in our community who are struggling themselves, by making them aware of services they could access at the Rainbow Centre including breakfast club, homeless support, Foodbank and Pantry.
All of this was made possible due to your continued dedication and support of the Rainbow Centre. Thank you so much for giving your time to this worthy event.”
Channel Rotary Novel Fund Raising Ideas – Press Release
Folkestone Channel Rotary has been raising money for charity for over 40 years, generating hundreds of thousand pounds, but sometimes a couple of novel ideas capture the imagination
Duncan Hopkin, long standing Rotarian and well known Folkestone town resident died earlier this year. His family found some historical Rotary ties which they gave to the Channel club. Rotarian Gary Calver decided that he would auction them to the highest bidder.
As these ties were an excellent reminder of Duncan and were no longer in production the bidding was keen. In the end one went to David Jackson an honorary Channel club member from twinned club Mechelen in Belgium and the second to Brian Banks one of the clubs longest standing members.
Past President Gary said “ We all fondly remember Duncan as an excellent member of the club who did a lot for the town and this seemed a fitting way to ensure the ties were still used and provide yet more money for the charity fund”
Footy Fun
This winter Rotarian Alan Myers came up with a great way of following the football leagues and raising money. Everyone paid an entrance fee and then picked their choice of the top three teams and bottom three teams in each league.
Each week the cumulative points were calculated by taking the top three totals less the bottom three. So at the end of the season the person with the best prediction won first prize.
This proved really popular with lots of football enthusiasts, provided lots of fun and added yet more money for the Channel Rotary Charity Fund

Whilst writing yet again Channel Rotarians were involved in helping to generate gifts of groceries for the Rainbow Centre foodbank. The three days managed to get another 1000 kgs stock for the Shepway Foodbank

Channel Rotary Golf Day Raises £8000
It was beautiful May day for the annual Channel Rotary Charity Golf Day, which made a great change from the previous two years when the weather had been atrocious. Sene Valley golf course was in excellent condition and thoroughly enjoyed by the 170 entrants – a record, clearly showing how popular this event has become.
The winning team were from Coyle Personnel Ltd, Mark Markwell, Mark Cornwell, Stuart Gasking and Dave Saunders. The winning Ladies team comprised Lynette Wallace, Jo Luckham, Jane McDonald and Christine Chapman and the mixed winners were Gary Calver, James de Caestecker, Claire Cullen and Karen Harris (F)

There was such a large turnout that the organisers had two raffles one for the morning and one for the afternoon and there were plenty of helpers to ensure that the day went smoothly. It also provided an opportunity to advertise the next Channel Events – March Cycle ride on 7th July and the Folkestone Triathlon on 15th September.
Organiser Guy Valentine Neale said “I’m delighted to confirm that we raised over £8000, a record, which will be distributed equally between our headline Charity, Headway Kent, and other local good causes.”

Channel Rotary Supports Hi Kent
President Geoff Milsted presents Channel Rotary Club’s cheque for £1000 to Zoe Holder of Hi Kent, who manages the branch office in Canterbury. She has worked with Hi Kent for 14 years and trained as an audiologist and ear wax removal specialist during Covid.
Channel Rotary Club is delighted to donate once again to Hi Kent, a Kent-based Charity providing sound support for people living with hearing loss. One in five people is deaf or severely hard of hearing, so help and advice is offered through local clinics and outreach services throughout the County, particularly via regular sessions at Age UK branches, senior citizens accommodation, care and residential homes.
Help on offer includes assessing people’s eligibility for free equipment, providing free IT support to enable them to get the best out of their equipment, counselling, social activities, hearing aid service, education and information sessions, Tinnitus support groups, lip-reading classes and ear wax problems – a service no longer provided by GP Practices.
Hi Kent depend on volunteer support and hope to further extend their outreach into personal visits to those unable to attend their regular clinics and local sessions.
Zoe was delighted to receive the donation “This will help to support our service in Folkestone and enable the Charity to continue to assist the deaf and hard of hearing in our area during a time of cut-backs and rising costs”
CHANNEL ROTARY RUNS KENTS BIGGEST QUIZ

144 contestants came to the William Harvey Grammar School in Folkestone to raise money for Folkestone Channel Rotary’s local charities.
Channel Rotary has been running this Wine & Wisdom evening for over 30 years and this year it was a sell out!
The 36 teams had to tackle a whole range of questions from science to sport whilst enjoying a ploughman’s and good wine. Quizmaster Derek Harris, Channel’s President, said “It was a fantastic evening with excellent support and a really fun atmosphere – what an easy and enjoyable way to raise charity funds”.
Such was the strength of the teams that two tied for first prize and three for the second. The winning teams were Rob & Alison Cowell, Terry Cooke-Davis and Tom McNiece from Folkestone Rotary and Peter & Sallie Hickman, Colin Drake and Michael Stephens from Sandgate.
Over £1500 was raised to support local charities.
It was so successful that as people were leaving they were asking when are you going to do the next one – next year for sure

ROTARY CLUBS SUPPORT SEA CADETS
Members of the two Folkestone Rotary Clubs – Folkestone and Folkestone Channel – attended the annual awards ceremony of The Folkestone Sea and Marine cadets at TS Invicta, Ross Way Folkestone, when they presented a cheque for £1000 to support the unit.
The unit is a thriving operation run by Lieutenant Smith with 92 members having sections for Junior Cadets age 9-13, Senior Cadets 12 – 18 and Marine Cadets from 13 -18. It is so popular that there is even a waiting list.
During the evening a variety of awards were given for the performance of the cadets over the last twelve months and included a presentation by a cadet on having an individual role supporting the Lord Lieutenant of the county.
The evening was well supported by families and friends who were able to congratulate the unit on all their successes especially several awards in the East Kent District
Lieutenant Smith said “ We would like to thank the Rotary Clubs of Folkestone for this generous gift which will enable us to continue to train young people in all the rules and ways of seamanship”

Rotary’s Further Support For Special Needs Beacon School
Representatives from the four Folkestone and Hythe Rotary clubs (Folkestone, Channel, Hythe and Romney Marsh) were delighted to present a cheque for £900 to Mark Jones, Beacon school’s Facilities Manager, at the school’s Community Garden. The garden was established earlier this year thanks to a previous donation of £2,000, made equally by the four clubs, and has been a huge success. Fruit, vegetables and flowers have been grown for the benefit of pupils and the local community. The garden has also become a welcome place of visitation by a recently established care group for dementia sufferers which uses it for therapy. The additional funds will enable the school to expand the garden and provide more beneficial uses.
Beacon is an all-age school (3-19 years) offering pupils with complex needs, profound and severe learning difficulties and physical and sensory impairments a wide range of educational experiences. It always seeks to involve parents and carers actively in the education of, and decision making for, their children both in and outside of school. The local Rotary clubs will continue to work closely with the school in the interest of supporting pupils and their families.
DUNCAN HOPKIN 1943 – 2023
A memorial service was held for Channel Rotarian Duncan Hopkin at Holy Trinty Church Folkestone on the 28th December. Duncan had been a member of Folkestone Channel Rotary for nearly 40 years and had been fighting cancer for several years with admiral fortitude and humour.
He enjoyed a very successful professional career and his extensive knowledge of local businesses and their workforce ensured that he had a wide range of contacts. Whilst his original career was a scientific one starting with research at Procter & Gamble he soon developed many other skills as a Director of Human Resources and Chartered Company secretary. He also worked for a while as a university lecturer. Having lived all over the UK, by the 80’s he could be found living in Folkestone when he worked for the Orion Insurance company and subsequently became HR director of Guardian Royal Exchange Assurance.
Not long after his arrival in Folkestone he was able to get the first Yehudi Menuhin Young Violinist International Competition to be held in the town and was intimately involved with its organisation and for several of subsequent competitions.
When he joined Rotary 38 years ago after being an active Round Tabler he brought with him a strong commitment to its ideals and charitable objectives. We remember with gratitude his long dedication as Club Secretary, his leadership with Rotary’s Polio Eradication Programme, his liaison with the Gurkhas and his contribution to true fellowship.
We all know how proud he was of his Scottish roots and his long association with Aberdeen University where he got a first class Chemistry degree. He was fiercely proud of his Scottish roots and a regular celebrant of the Robbie Burns traditions. The annual Rotary Club Burns Night celebrations brought out his generosity of ‘spirit’ as he got the sassenachs to take part.
The untimely death of Duncan will create a large void. Duncan was a true one off and very much Rotary’s gain. His ‘can do’ and ‘will do’ attitude was ever apparent for mutual good. Rest in Peace
